I was chatting with Tubbzy (btw luving the sig) and Marc this morning and whilst talking about a TV program I watched last night I used the expression "Escape Goat", a common expression in english to unfairly blame a single person for a teams failure... "Person X was made an escape goat". Im kinda interested now to find out exactly how long society has been picking on those poor old goats, haha.
Anyone know the history of this "Escape Goat" expression... when and why it came into existance? I presume it has something to do with goats escaping but how did it become associated with the false/wrongful blame of why a team failed.
And does it translate to other countries? Do you guys from outside the U.K have a similar expression? and do you also blame the poor old goat?
The Azazel goat (pronounced in Hebrew as aw-zah-zale), translated as scapegoat in the King James Version, was one of two goats chosen for a ceremony on the Day of Atonement. The first goat was sacrificed, while the scapegoat was taken out into the wilderness and released.
The original meaning of scapegoat was escape goat, the goat that was allowed to "escape" with its life.

"bouc émissaire" in French well known expression ("escape" goat idd)
for your info many Frenchies mistake it for "bouc (goat) et mystère", which sounds the same but means "goat and misteries"
I'd have gone mad playing on a Fr server by now

In Goatish, there's a similar expression which goes like "neheheh" meaning loser, which sounds very much like "neheheh" which is dwarf pie, it's very tasty, and there's also "neheheh" meaning: get out of my pen before I shoot you with my air rifle and back hand slap you with a rubber chicken.

Actually the Polish blame goats aswell! "Kozio? ofiarny" The meaning is fairly the same, although it's more of a 'sacrificial' goat than an escape goat in direct translation
The expression (at least the polish one) prolly came from pagan rituals involving animal sacrifice. It's a multinational conspiracy against goats, I say! ...and couldn't care less either
