Hey all fellow tanks!
I was long thinking about trying to find some time to put together a guide/moive more into the essence of tanking, more in detail on all the diffrent sides of tanking. Personaly i love tanking, i love how challanging and unforgiving it is.
I'm sure that's why most of you chose tanking as well
While i was thinking on this matter if/how i should do it i found these two videos on youtube from tankspot and i'm now glad i did not go into trying to do something like that^^
Anyways, take a look on them. Really great guide movies.
Think we can all learn something from them, i sure did

tbh i chose tanking cos i like seeing my health at full pretty much all the time (mostly solo, butit is awesome when you see it during raids
)
those videos take a long time to buffer though
will have to take a look at them when i have more time.
Contrary to popular belief, i know exactly what im doing.
.....Woops.

I enjoy tanking because it requires you always to be on your toes. Roles like ranged dps _used_ to be very boring because in some boss fights you don't have to move at all and you could even do the same dps as you usually did while watching tv or something like that.
The video's didn't teach me anything new really. It's kinda the basics of tanking and it's something you learn while tanking. Mob mechanics, like to move them backwards, are something you learn while levelling. I got a lot of alts and each alt shows a different view of killing mobs the fastest way or reducing your damage input so you get lower downtime. The 4H way to reset it was new for me though, but when you wipe the tanks are usually the first ones to die anyway
"The goal of war is not to die for your country, it's to make the other bastard die for his"

For some it might not be news or something new but it could be helpfull for some, if it does then that's great
It's hard to master tanking, doubt anyone will ever be able to fully 100% master it. You can always learn something new

I have pretty much tanked everything in the game, exceptions would be bosses in old Naxx, and some bosses in SWP (tanked them after WOTK but don't count that). Started playing the game in August 2005, went prot at level 20 and apart for 5 days after WOTLK came out have been prot the whoel time since.
I can still guarantee that you learn things as you go along, every patch or minor change can change the best rotations for threat generation, positioning for mobs etc etc.
Most interesting fights to date. I like Illidian P2 as a FR tank, had to have 2 tanks in sync so that they didnt get to far apart and wipe the raid (in the early days once on farm just nuke and loot)
I always liked tanking Hakkar, tank swoping fights are amoung the best in my opinion as makes everyone get involved so you aren't carrying tanks long for trash only.

Remember when no boss in game was tauntable ?
Aggro swapping was the expression of pure threat meters powering and tanks stopping attacks... good old BWL fights...
Those were the time
"Barrens chat is like a stupidity centrifuge, distilling the unexpurgated banal thoughts of a thousand morons into a hardened impenetrable lump of smacktardery spilling endlessly across the bottom of your screen"
@ Tue, 02/06/2009 - 12:10
The only boss that I can remember where you had to swop threat and it wasn't tauntable was Vael, the rest where tauntable (the ones you had to swop threat on that is)
The bosses where you didnt have to swop threat werent tauntable and it was up to DPS to not over aggro or they would die/cause a wipe. That has been moved by making just about every boss tauntable so DPS overaggro then laugh (normally see ppl typing lol oops) at it as the tank taunts back.
Added BB as was thinking of vanilla and forgot about TBC bosses.
Oh yeah Depression room boss as well. But none in MC afaik, no others that weren't tauntable that needed to be in BWL.

Blood Boil was an awsome tank fight!
Gota remember Kael'thas aswell, with the Pyroblasts that was fun ^^

3 things i would add
1. make sure you have your primary abilities towards the centre of your screen, so you don't need to take your eyes off the action
2. make sure you have a raid frame that clearly shows if someone has agro (xperl for example or grid), so they you can taunt off them fast.
3. set your raid frame to dim players that are outside your taunt range.

Personally my number 1 favourite tank fight was Illidan, myself and Marcbolan/Feral on the Flames of Azzinoth, haven't come across a fight that's more rewarding/unforgiving in terms of tank awareness than that imo
We are all puppets, I'm just the puppet who can see the strings
@ Wed, 02/12/2009 - 14:56
For tanking awareness you can't beat pugging TBC heroics in freshly geared blues, no raid that i have ever tanked has come close.
You weren't sure if to be more scared of your own party or the mobs. With no defensive cd's all i could do was back up to give the healer time to heal etc. Moving fast to catch any additional groups that your stupid hunter has decided to pull or broken cc.
WotLK has never been able to compare. Walking into a WotLK heroic without needing CC and just AoE tanking the lot was just plain easy. Kind of why i stopped tanking, it got boring. I saw way too many poor tanks tanking the top content in Naxx and to a lessor extent Ulduar, which took off the gloss.

I always liked and wanted to Be a Tank just because its awesome to have the feeling of "being the undestructable one who cathes al the blows" protecting those dps'ers and healers from the bad ones ^^
@ Wed, 02/12/2009 - 14:09
@Sent
I totally agree.
I remember hitting the Hellfire Heroics on my Warr (tanking) with a priest healer and nuke happy Mage and Warlock guildies (both gnomes, I might add!) Running those instances with the ninja pulling nukers made me vow never to tank again!
Truly a battle against your own party members. Funny but depressing.
Tanking Black Morass with them was amusing, too; I doubt I've ever spammed abilities so much as in there, with them pulling everything EVER that they could find.
@ Wed, 02/12/2009 - 14:38
ya, the good old days of tbc and before tanking will never come again
its a shame, cause tanking then was fun
@ Wed, 02/12/2009 - 14:58
yeah tanking heroics in tbc was mad when we first all dinged 70 lol - i was still burnt out from tanking mc/bwl/aq raids all the time (with ranged dps aggro monkeys), but tanking now is so much easier than it used to be almost faceroll easy tbh (although thankgod they improved warrior aoe tanking! aoe tanking raid mobs at level 60 was a pain in the arse lol).
these days i'm starting to enjoy tanking again, but it has taken from the release of karazhan in tbc until now for the burnt out to fade lol.
